The West Metro subregion includes communities with many different landscapes, water resources, and development patterns. It stretches from the western suburbs bordering Minneapolis and the Lake Minnetonka area to the rural parts of western Hennepin and Carver counties. Communities across the subregion experience different water resource challenges and opportunities based on their local conditions.

The West Metro Workgroup brings together organizations that influence, manage, protect, and plan for water resources in the west metropolitan area. The workgroup provides a forum for sharing information, coordinating efforts, and aligning priorities to help achieve the West Metro subregional goals identified in the Metro Area Water Supply Plan chapter of the 2050 Water Policy Plan

  • The quality and quantity of water is protected.
  • Water is conserved and used efficiently.
  • Water resources support public health and safety for everyone.
  • Responsible growth is supported by reliable and adequate water resources.

The Metro Area Water Supply Plan was originally developed with a focus on drinking water supply. Since then, subregional engagement has expanded to reflect the understanding that all water is connected and influenced by land use decisions. Today, the workgroup uses a One Water approach and includes representatives from public water suppliers, watershed organizations, soil and water conservation districts, local governments, and environmental resource organizations.
