2026 State of the Region

Currents of change: 100 years of regional planning for life

The Met Council is hosting its annual State of the Region event on Thursday, Jan. 29.

Help us welcome new Met Council Chair Robin Hutcheson and listen to two engaging panel discussions. We’ll share insights about past efforts, current trends, and strategic plans to protect clean water for future generations. Then, we’ll dive into our shared vision for the region as laid out in Imagine 2050, including how technical assistance can help drive comprehensive planning.

The Mississippi River was labeled a “public nuisance” after a 1926 study found only three living fish between Saint Paul and Hastings. It led to regional collaboration, including wastewater standards and the area’s first treatment facility – significant advancements toward modern river management. Water quality continued to improve over the next several decades, and today more than three million people are served by the Met Council’s nine award-winning water resource recovery facilities.
