The new lift station will pump wastewater from the local wastewater collection system into the Met Council regional sanitary sewer system. A series of regional sewers then conveys the wastewater to the Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant in Saint Paul.

The lift station will include communications equipment to monitor pumping equipment, and backup power to maintain reliable, uninterrupted operation.
 

• What will happen to the Brooklyn Park site?
  • The Brookyln Park lift station will be demolished and decommissioned after the Fridley lift station is in operation. The odor control building and additional structures that house the mechanical and electrical equipment will remain onsite, as pipes will still cross from Brooklyn Park to Fridley under the river.
• Why won’t the new lift station be built at the existing site in Brooklyn Park?
  • The site does not have enough space to expand the existing lift station for future use without acquiring additional properties.
  • The new site accommodates a large area, which is necessary for the construction of the new, larger lift station.
  • The existing site in Brooklyn Park will continue to house an odor control building and additional structures that house the mechanical and electrical equipment, as pipes will still cross from Brooklyn Park to Fridley under the river.
• Did Met Council purchase the Camp Lockeslea property from the Girl Scouts?
  • Yes, Met Council purchased the property at 6900 East River Road in Fridley when the opportunity arose in 2014.
• Will Met Council need the entire property for their lift station and other facilities?
  • No. After construction is completed, a large portion of land on the north side of the parcel will not be needed for buildings or maintenance of our facilities.
  • Once construction is completed, we will partner with interested agencies to explore opportunities for the remaining usable area.
• Why will the new lift station site take five years to complete?
  • This will be the largest lift station in the Met Council system. It will be 110 feet in diameter and 70 feet deep.
  • Due to the lift station’s proximity to the Mississippi River, the depth and size needed for the new lift station, it must be built using a special method.
  • This project includes multiple components – building a new lift station in Fridley, repairing the pipes crossing the river, and decommissioning the existing lift station at the Brooklyn Park site.
